Acrylic Painting Handicraft Resources

Acrylic painting can be a great skill to learn. It is very affordable to get started, and there are lots of resources out there to teach you how to paint with acrylics. Acrylic paint dries quickly, so if your space is limited it can be a great alternative to oil painting.

Below you will find many different kinds of resources so you can help your child learn in the best way possible. Book learner? Check. Video? Check. You will also find links to all of the supplies you will need to get started.

Supplies Needed

To get started with acrylic painting, you will need is paint, an easel, palette, palette knives, paintbrushes, and canvas.

All-in-One Kit

This is a great option if you want to just buy everything at once.

Paint

The first set is the paint set that I have. I really like these paints. The colors are beautiful and it is easy to work with. The second set has a lot less colors but each color comes in bulk. The last set is the one I always use when I do art projects with my kids. It cleans up very easily from wood tables, countertops, skin and clothes.

If you prefer to buy acrylic paints in bulk and mix your own colors, a color wheel is a great addition to your painting area. I also linked a fantastic color mixing book for your convenience.

Easel

The first one is the main easel that I have. I really like how you can adjust the height of the easel and I LOVE how is all folds and locks together with all of your painting supplies inside. If you would prefer the option of standing or sitting the middle easel would be an excellent choice. If you have multiple kids learning to paint then the last option would probably be a good choice.

Palette

Even though palettes come in a variety of materials, I would avoid the wood ones. The reason is that if your paint dries while you are painting then it is really hard to get it off without damaging the wood. When this happens too many times it can be hard to find a clean place to mix colors on (ask me how I know). While you can definitely just use a spare white plate, here are some options you may want to consider. In order from left to right, they are plastic, acrylic, and disposable palette paper if you don't like washing up the paint when you are done.

Palette Knives

Palette knives make it a lot easier to mix up the paint. You can also use them to paint with instead of paint brushes.

Paintbrushes

These paintbrush set are all synthetic, except the last one that has 4 natural hog hair bristle paintbrushes (the rest of the set is synthetic).

Canvas

The first is a pack of 8x10 canvases, and the second option is a multi-size pack which would be great for a serious painter. The third option is canvas paper. Canvas paper is a great choice for people that don't have a lot of room to store canvases.
